mtDNA polymorphism in natural populations of D.albomicans was studied with 8 restriction endonucleases. Thirty-four restriction nucleomorphs were detected among 82 isofemale lines from 8 populations, each of which was mapped for the 8 enzymes. Several methods, including UPG, were used to analyse the genetic relationships either among nucleomorphs or among populations. Combining our result with other references, following conclusion can be deduced: 1) Both the base constitution and the functional regions of this mtDNA molecular have been constrained during evolution. 2) There exists high intrapopulation polymorphism in D. albomicans, and this polymorphism can conceal the difference between populations to some extent. 3) D.albomicans may originated around Malaysia and Kanlimantan island. At early stage, the ancestral population divided into two lineages, eastern and western population, both of which expanded towards north. Then, the western lineage diverged into two sublineages again when it reached the North of the Middle-South Penisula. Thereby, the pattern of geographic distribution was constructed in D.albomicans after the two differentiations, according to which the extant populations of D.albomicans can be distinguished into three geographic populations, namely, the eastern, the middle and the western.
