摘要	Translators' introduction: Although there has been much research on a number of primates in recent years little information is available on Chinese species. Only a few of the studies (Chen et al., 1979; Zhang et al., 1981) in China have been translated and made available in the west. The present article is of special interest because the findings of this study are compared with research on another colobine Presbytis entellus(Jay, 1965). The authors suggest that Rhinopithecus bieti is in some ways more similar in social organization to P. entellus than to the more closely related Rhinopithecus roxellanae. Specifically, r. bieti lives in relatively small multi-male groups, similar in size and composition to P. entellus. Rhinopithecus roxellanae, on the other hand, lives in multi-male groups ranging seasonally from 20 to 30 individuals per group in the winter, up to several hundred individuals in the summer and fall (Shou, 1962;Hu et al., 1980). This comparative approach is of great interest, and it is hoped that the following translation will provide information of value to western primatologists.
